How the Leather Cutting Optimiser Works

Leather is expensive, and waste adds up fast. Whether you're cutting a single Passport cover or batching a dozen A5 covers from a full side, knowing exactly how to lay out your pieces before you cut saves money and material.

The optimiser takes your leather dimensions (or a preset like A3 or A4 panel), the notebook sizes you want to cut, and calculates the tightest possible packing arrangement. It accounts for grain direction — all covers are aligned the same way so the leather stretches consistently across every cover you make.

The visual layout shows each piece with dimension labels, fold line positions, and colour coding by notebook size. Below the layout, you'll see your efficiency percentage, total waste area, and if you enter your leather cost, the precise cost per cover.

When there's dead space, the tool suggests smaller notebook sizes that would fit — turning waste into additional covers. It also offers practical ideas for using offcuts: bookmarks, key fobs, cable tidies, and more.

Supported Notebook Sizes

The optimiser supports all 9 sizes in the Measure Thrice Press system: Passport (226×130mm), Field Notes (226×146mm), A6 Cover (258×154mm), Personal (238×177mm), TN Regular (268×216mm), B6 Slim (288×177mm), Moleskine Large (308×216mm), A5 Cover (344×216mm), and B5 JIS (412×263mm). You can also add custom sizes for non-standard notebooks.
